Erik ten Hag had planned to be Manchester United's manager for the next 10 years prior to his sacking last October, former first-team coach Benni McCarthy has claimed. The Dutchman was relieved of his duties after a dismal run of form, with United languishing in 13th place in the Premier League table ahead of his dismissal. The decision made by Manchester United co-owners Ineos brought an end to Ten Hag's two-year spell at Old Trafford, during which he led the club to success in both the the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
